A ring light is used with the camera to improve the lighting and therefore the quality of the photos you take -mostly for portraits and selfies from what ive seen.
It makes a more even light that better illuminate the subject than the ambient light that is normally present. I have seen these lights used with the camera in the center hole as well with the light off to the side.
